‘Tis the season to GIVE!
Let’s spread the cheer THROUGHOUT THE NEW YEAR…
I don’t know about you, but this is my favorite time of year! Seeing all of the Christmas lights around my neighborhood, and hearing holiday songs on the radio fills me with joy.
I love everything about it EXCEPT the SHOPPING!
Each year, I swear I am going to keep it simple and get the shopping done ahead of time. But of course, each year, I break that promise and find myself at the mall on Christmas Eve. Obviously, this year is no different. Despite all of the craziness of last minute shopping and people-filled malls, there is one thing I find surprisingly satisfying about the the hectic holiday season and that’s seeing collection boxes full of toy; donations made by generous strangers hoping to bring joy to someone in need. Seeing all of these toys tells me the spirit of giving is alive and well during the holiday season.
That’s were these wonderful volunteers come in. I was humbled to see the amazing group of volunteers working tirelessly to make sure each child will receive a toy that is appropriate for his or her age.
Together with our daughter, Victoria and son, Andres, I joined in the efforts of sorting and organizing. We saw everything from dolls, to board games, to arts and crafts and monster trucks and while the variety and number of toys are incredible, there might not be enough. You see, these toys collected are not only distributed during the holiday season, but also on special occasions. If a child is celebrating a birthday or maybe it’s his or her last chemotherapy treatment, they are surprised with one of the donated toys. I guess you could say it’s the gift that keeps on giving throughout the year.
We may not be able to keep our Christmas lights up past January, but we can certainly continue to spread cheer throughout the year. It’s also the greatest gift we could give our children: teaching them to be selfless and to think of ways to help others.
As for the hardworking volunteers I was honored to meet at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and the Miami Children’s Health Foundation, along with the countless others that work year-round to help those in need, THANK YOU for inspiring me with all that you do. May you have a blessed holiday and a wonderful new year!
Best wishes to all of you.
