Attention all Moms and Dads to be! Did you know there’s a Parenting Boot Camp for you?
No kidding! Many first time parents and even some veterans can feel a little overwhelmed the first few weeks, even months, after their baby goes home with them from the hospital. Those first baths are a little scary and figuring out why your baby won’t stop crying can be frustrating. Add to that, the fact you’re not getting much sleep and, well, an emotional breakdown is not unheard of. Even with all of the books out there about how to care for a newborn, putting the words to practice is often easier “read” than done. That’s why I think it’s wonderful that there’s a place you can go to put your mind at ease and speak with a specialist. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital offers its next “Parenting Boot Camp” Thursday, October 22nd. (Please keep in mind registration is required.)
Dr. Marielys Rodriguez-Varela, who developed the boot camp course outline,” says the class offers valuable information on how to best care for your baby. “New parents will get a comprehensive review of what to expect when they bring their babies home and how to handle routine activities such as feeding, bathing and managing a fussy baby. Seasoned parents will get the benefit of little tricks that pediatricians with time and experience can share, so they can add to their techniques and improve their parenting skills,” says Rodriguez-Varela. Those who attend the class will have access to a pediatrician who can answer all of their questions. “Knowing that a baby will go home to a family that is able to take care of him/her appropriately because they are confident in their skill set before they even become parents gives me joy. It is very special when I talk to families at the end of a class and hear them say that they feel prepared to welcome their baby home because of what they have just learned and that they trust us with the care of their kids because our dedication shows.”
